4 Rules for Saying "Yes" to the Suit

4 Ways to Choose the Perfect Suit or Tux

To all the guys as well as those that enjoy a nice suit, let’s talk about you for a moment! We know how wedding planning has the ability to be overwhelming at times, sometimes you feel left out and your only job is to show up and pay for this shindig! Let’s change that!

Saying YES to the dress can be a process. You hop from store to store wondering if you will ever have that Cinderella moment. Every detail is carefully measured and stitched with precision. Picking out your suit should be an enjoyable process too! But unlike that wedding gown, your suit can be in your closet for years to come! Unless you buy that full tux with the cumberbund, whip that sucker out and wear the stitches off of it for other events, special occasions, and even that Shark Tank interview you have been working towards.

Follow these 4 rules and we are here to help you say “Yes” to the suit or tux!

1. Go to a tailor!

There is no such thing as one size fits all. Just like a dress, your suit should scream you! Or at least you shouldn’t be screaming to get out of it. A well-tailored suit has that perfect fit that hugs you in all the right places (just like your spouse will be on your wedding night). It also just feels better than a rented or off the rack garment.

If you have ever been to the suit department and just couldn’t find a thing to wear. Get one that is a smidgen too big and alter it! The alteration costs vary based on the tailor and how fancy you want to get. For a more general rule, you should expect to spend anywhere between $10 to $150.

If you’re ballin’ on a budget, get a less expensive suit and spend more money on professional tailoring. The fit of the suit is more eye-catching than the stitching and fabric. Usually, retailers offer complimentary or discounted alterations if purchased a suit from their store.

Everybody’s crazy ‘bout a sharp dressed man!

2. Splurge a little

Sometimes couples try to save as much as they can on their wedding. When considering the breakdown of your budget, keep in mind that suit can last a lot longer than the cake or flowers.

When you begin to look for a suit or tux, try not to bargain hunt but rather search for the best value. Invest in a suit you will want to wear more than once, this is a great opportunity to upgrade that single life wardrobe.

3. Keep It Versatile

You should definitely think about all the other occasions you could wear your suit to after the big day. If you can’t think of any throw some Gatsby parties!

The traditional wedding attire is a classic clean black tux, however, that is very formal. If you want something different and a tinge more casual, you can substitute with a black, navy, or grey suit. Tan, ivory, or white suits can work for spring and summer weddings, but let’s be real the ladies at church will be talking about you if you wear that white suit past labor day. Some have even worn velvet or a colored coat, these are always some of our favorites!

Having a versatile suit does not mean it won’t match your significant other or the aesthetic of your wedding (I know you were super worried about that). Discuss the theme and style you are trying to achieve. This will help you decide which way to go. As for the wedding party, choose their attire after you choose your suit(s) and the dress(es) for the best match (duh).

4. Plan your Accessories

My little Disney heart is singing “look for the bare necessities”, accessories are the bare necessities people!

Your accessories are just as important, but can be even better! The devil is in the details of your accessories. To help match the wedding theme, play around with some of these:

  • Socks - love me some superhero socks

  • Tie - pattern it up to “tie” in with your wedding colors

  • Belt - you don’t have to go too fancy but wear a nice one maybe get a subtle pattern or a belt bucket

  • Dress shirt - just make sure it fits well, I have seen some guys get the sleeves and back customized with fun fabrics

  • Cufflinks - I’ve seen some really cool ones with planes, nerdy symbols, and sweet notes from the soon to be spouse

  • Tie clip - I’m honestly sad more people don’t use these, they really up the anty

  • Pocket square - coordinate with that tie to TIE it all together (I had to)

  • Shoes - get those snazzy suede or leather ones

Try-on some options, find your style and wear what makes you feel extra bonafide on your wedding day.

Congratulations!

You are going to rock that suit!
